We gathered our global design leaders for a two-day charrette intended to push our talent to the limits of their creativity. Through their participation, they explored the purpose, role, and physical manifestation of the mall of the future in four possible scenarios. To inspire and inform them, we invited four speakers with different backgrounds and perspectives, all of whom understand the importance of constant reinvention.
We wanted to explore the future of the mall. A defining institution in North America and a global phenomenon, the mall as we know it has met its greatest challenge yet – ecommerce. Many are dying, many are struggling to reinvent themselves and still, amidst the chaos, others are flourishing.
We identified eight attributes that we believe to be the key components of every mall. Then, we looked at the trends affecting them today and the big disruptors we see on the horizon – but whose impact we can’t predict.
Two days to deconstruct the mall of today. And create the mall experience of tomorrow.
The result was an exploratory deconstruction of ‘the mall’ as we know it and an examination of the larger implications of community, ownership, and connectivity.
